Another added attraction is that it affords magnificent views of Kangchendzonga and the rolling plains of Bengal.
Things To Do On A Honeymoon in Kalimpong
The thickly wooded Kalimpong is an ideal place to go on long walks and enjoy the beautiful scenery all around. The town also has some interesting places that offer a slice of history about which many people are not aware of. Dr Graham's Home is one such place. It is a missionary school set up by J A Graham in 1900 for destitute Anglo Indian children. Today, the school is spread over 500 acres of lush green landscape and every year a festival called May Fair is organized at Dr Graham's Home.
Gauripur House is another such destination. It was the abode of the great Indian poet, Guru Dev Rabindranath Tagore. He used to stay here, whenever he came to Kalimpong. Another memory associated with Tagores that you can visit in Kalimpong is Pratima Tagore House. This house was built in 1943 by Pratima Tagore, daughter-in-law of Rabindranath Tagore. It has a nice garden and offers lovely views of the landscape. The house still has original furnishing and lots of memorabilia related to Rabindranath Tagore.
Deolo Hill is major tourist attraction of Kalimpong. It is the highest point in Kalimpong and offers stupendous views of Kanchenjunga, Durpin Hill, Kalimpong Township and the Teesta valley. The place has an 8-acre lush parkland with manicured flower gardens and is an excellent picnic spot. Sherpa View Point offers magnificent views of Kanchenjunga and other hills. There is also a statue of Lord Buddha sitting in a lotus position, located nearby. Jelep La View Point that offers spectacular views of Jelep la Pass is a must-visit. The place also offers excellent views of confluence of river Teesta, Reang and Relli.
Those interested in Buddhist culture can visit Thongsa Gompa and Durpin Monastery. Thongsa Gompa was built in 1692 and is the oldest monastery in Kalimpong. Durpin Monastery derives its name from the Durpin Hill on which it is located. It houses rare Buddhist scripts that were brought by Dalai Lama from Tibet. From the monastery one gets excellent views of Kalimpong town, Mt. Kanchenjunga and the tea gardens.
You can also undertake short excursions to the beautiful mountain hamlets of Lava and Loleygaon. At Loleygaon you can experience the unique Canopy Walk - a 180-meters long hanging wooden tree-top bridge that goes through the dense jungle.
